EX-protected luminaires (ATEX)

Some luminaires have to withstand a great deal. In certain areas, there is a risk of explosion. The ATEX directives prescribe the highest standards of safety for the operation of electrical equipment in such environments — including the use of explosion-proof specialist luminaires under specific conditions. To meet these standards, we rely exclusively on top products from leading manufacturers.

Ex-protected luminaires for hazardous areas

Wherever flammable gases, vapours, or dusts can be present in hazardous concentrations, special requirements apply to lighting. The European ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU defines which equipment is approved for use in such areas and how it must be marked. Ex-protected luminaires (also known as ATEX luminaires) must be appropriately certified and may only be used in the zone for which they are approved.

You can find more information about the ATEX directives in our YouTube video.

Our explosion-proof LED luminaires are suited to a wide range of workplaces where hazardous conditions exist. In our shop you'll find the right Ex-protected luminaires for petrol stations, joinery workshops, bakeries, paint shops, and similar production halls and storage areas. We rely on high-quality LED products from outstanding manufacturers such as Zalux and Airfal, combining maximum protection and extreme impact resistance with high efficiency and long service life.

ATEX zones: the right luminaire for every classification

Which Ex-protected luminaire is permitted for a given application depends on the zone classification of the hazardous area. The classification is based on how frequently and for how long an explosive atmosphere is present:

Zone Atmosphere Frequency Typical application
Zone 0 Gas/vapour Continuously or long-term Interior of tanks, silos
Zone 1 Gas/vapour Occasionally Petrol stations, paint shops, chemical plants
Zone 2 Gas/vapour Rarely/briefly Storage rooms with flammable substances
Zone 20 Dust Continuously or long-term Interior of silos, mills
Zone 21 Dust Occasionally Bakeries, joinery workshops, grain stores
Zone 22 Dust Rarely/briefly Storage areas with dust generation
Electrician's tip: Zone classification must be established by a qualified specialist as part of a hazard assessment. Only once this has been done can the appropriate ATEX-certified Ex-protected luminaire be selected. Our lighting experts are happy to help you find the right luminaire for your zone.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about Ex-protected luminaires and ATEX

What are Ex-protected luminaires and when are they required?
Ex-protected luminaires (also called ATEX luminaires) are explosion-proof lights for use in areas where explosive atmospheres caused by gases, vapours, or dusts can occur. They are required in such areas under the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and must be appropriately certified.
What do ATEX Zones 1, 2, 21, and 22 mean?
Zone 1 and Zone 2 describe areas with an explosive gas atmosphere (Zone 1: occasionally, Zone 2: rarely/briefly). Zone 21 and Zone 22 apply to dust atmospheres (Zone 21: occasionally, Zone 22: rarely/briefly). Zone 0 and Zone 20 are the most hazardous zones with a continuously present explosive atmosphere. Each zone requires a correspondingly certified luminaire.
Where are Ex-protected luminaires used?
Ex-protected luminaires are used wherever explosive atmospheres can occur: petrol stations, paint shops, joinery workshops, bakeries, chemical plants, oil and gas facilities, shipyards, and production halls or storage areas containing flammable substances.
What does IP66 mean for Ex-protected luminaires?
IP66 means complete protection against dust ingress and protection against powerful water jets from any direction. For Ex-protected luminaires, a high IP rating such as IP66 is especially important as these luminaires are often used in harsh industrial environments with dust, moisture, and chemical exposure.
How do I know which Ex-protected luminaire I need?
The right Ex-protected luminaire depends on the zone classification of the area (Zone 1, 2, 21, or 22), the gas group, and the temperature class. These parameters must be determined by a qualified specialist as part of a hazard assessment. Our lighting experts are happy to help you select the right ATEX-certified luminaire.
