The different EX zones

Potentially explosive atmospheres are divided into different zones depending on the probability of their occurrence. For flammable gases, zones 0, 1 and 2 apply. Flammable dusts are divided into zones 20, 21 and 22.

Zone 0: permanent, long-term or frequent vapors, mists and gases
Zone 1: occasional vapors, mists and gases
Zone 2: infrequent, short-term vapors, mists and gases

Zone 20: permanent, long-term or frequent dusts
Zone 21: occasional dusts
Zone 22: rare, short-time dusts

The extent to which your EX lamp must be explosion-proof depends on which zone your application is assigned to.
