FAQ: Garden Lighting

What IP protection rating do I need for garden lights?
IP44 is the minimum for free-standing outdoor fixtures such as bollard lights and wall lights. For low-level fixtures, ground spikes and locations exposed to spray water, IP65 is recommended. For pond lights and in-ground spotlights in water-adjacent areas, IP67 or IP68 is required.
What is the difference between bollard lights, globe lights and ground spikes?
Bollard lights stand on a concrete foundation or ground sleeve and illuminate paths and driveways from above. Globe lights are decoratively shaped fixtures mounted on posts or columns, ideal for terraces and park settings. Ground spikes are pushed directly into the soil to accent flower beds, trees or hedges — no foundation required.
Are solar lights suitable for professional outdoor use?
In sun-exposed locations and for sites without a mains connection, yes. Modern solar lights with integrated dusk sensors run for 10 to 14 hours. For reliable, daylight-independent permanent lighting, a 230V hardwired connection remains the preferred choice.
Does a garden lighting system need its own circuit?
For installations with 6 or more light points, a dedicated outdoor circuit with a Type B RCD and separate fuse protection in the sub-distribution board is recommended, in line with DIN VDE 0100-701. This keeps the system safe and makes future extensions straightforward.
What colour temperature is best for garden paths and outdoor areas?
Neutral white (4000 K) works well for orientation lighting on paths. Warm white (2700–3000 K) creates a more atmospheric feel and suits terraces and decorative accents. Daylight white (5000–6500 K) is recommended for security and working areas.
How many bollard lights do I need for a garden path?
As a rule of thumb: one bollard light every 4 to 6 metres for a path width of 1.5 to 2 metres. For wider paths or single-sided placement, reduce the spacing to 3 to 4 metres. Light output, beam angle and mounting height all influence the exact number needed.
Can garden lights be used outdoors permanently?
Yes, provided the fixtures are rated for outdoor use — indicated by the IP rating and the manufacturer's outdoor classification. Use frost-resistant cables (NYM-J or H07RN-F), seal junction boxes to the appropriate protection class, and choose housings in die-cast aluminium or stainless steel.
What does professional garden lighting cost?
Basic ground spikes start from around €15–30 per unit. Bollard lights in stainless steel or die-cast aluminium range from €80 to €400. For a garden path with 8 bollard lights including materials and installation, a total budget of at least €1,500 to €3,000 should be planned.
What materials are suitable for outdoor garden lights?
Die-cast aluminium (corrosion-resistant, lightweight), stainless steel (highly weather-resistant, low-maintenance) and UV-stabilised polycarbonate are proven choices. Zinc die-cast is more affordable but less durable in permanently wet conditions. Brass and copper develop a patina and suit classic designs.
How is a bollard light installed?
Bollard lights are mounted on a concrete foundation or in a ground sleeve. The supply cable is laid in a conduit buried at least 60 cm deep (per DIN VDE 0100-520). Connection and RCD protection must be verified by a qualified electrician before commissioning.
