Construction and Function of a Flush-Mounted Insert
A flush-mounted insert is the mechanism behind the cover plate: it contains the switching contacts, actuating mechanism, and connection terminals. It is mounted in a flush-mounted box and then completed with a system-specific frame and cover plate.
The most common insert types at a glance:
- Switch insert – for on/off switching, available as single-pole, two-way, or intermediate switch
- Push-button insert – self-resetting, for doorbells, pulse relays, and staircase lighting
- Dimmer insert – for stepless brightness control of luminaires
- Socket insert – with earth contact, optionally with child protection or USB outlet
- Control switch insert – with integrated indicator light for non-visible loads
Many inserts feature screw terminals or push-in terminals at the rear. The appropriate connection method depends on the switch programme and conductor cross-section. Refer to the manufacturer's technical datasheets for details.
Gira Flush-Mounted Inserts
Gira is one of the most widely specified manufacturers for flush-mounted installation. Inserts are available for almost all switching functions and are compatible with Gira switch programmes including System 55, E2, Esprit, and further series. The consistent design system allows switches, sockets, and other devices to be combined within a single frame.
In commercial projects and larger fit-outs, the system depth of the Gira range is a significant advantage: from basic switch inserts to KNX-capable components, all inserts come from a single compatible ecosystem.
Merten Flush-Mounted Inserts
Merten (Schneider Electric) offers flush-mounted inserts for all standard functions and is particularly well known for the M-Smart and M-Plan programmes. The inserts feature quick push-fit mounting and robust contact technology. In renovation work, Merten inserts are a frequent choice when existing frames are to be retained.
Manufacturer Compatibility and System Selection
Flush-mounted inserts are not interchangeable across manufacturers. Frames, cover plates, and inserts within a system are matched exclusively to each other. For projects involving mixed installations, it is advisable to settle on a single switch programme early in the planning process.
Alongside Gira and Merten, WATT24 stocks inserts from Busch-Jaeger, Jung, and Berker. An overview of all available switch configurations is available in the switches category.
