USB sockets

A socket with USB charging built directly into the wall – no adapter, no power brick, no cable clutter. USB sockets combine a standard Schuko contact (16 A / 250 V~) with one or two integrated USB charging ports and are the cleanest solution for modern installations in offices, hotels, conference rooms and residential buildings. At WATT24 you'll find flush-mounted USB sockets from leading manufacturers including Gira, Busch-Jaeger and Jung – in Type A and Type C versions, with and without Power Delivery.

Had to replace a lamp, but the same was no longer available. Great advice, found a suitable replacement and delivered it quickly.

Why USB sockets are a smart choice

USB sockets combine a Schuko contact and USB charging function in a single insert – the Schuko outlet remains free for other devices while the USB port charges smartphones, tablets or headsets without a plug-in power supply. This saves socket space, reduces cable clutter and delivers a cleaner look than external charging adapters.

  • Space-saving – no power brick occupying the Schuko contact
  • Cleaner installation – no loose adapter on the wall
  • Versatile – office, hotel, residential, public areas
  • Future-proof – USB-C with Power Delivery as the growing standard

Types of USB sockets

Not all USB sockets are the same – depending on requirements, there are different versions that vary in connector type, charging output and number of ports.

Type Connector Charging output Typical application
Schuko + USB Type A 1x USB-A up to 2.1 A / approx. 10 W Residential, basic office installation
Schuko + 2x USB Type A 2x USB-A up to 3.0 A total Living room, bedroom, hotel
Schuko + USB Type A + Type C 1x USB-A, 1x USB-C up to 30 W (PD) Office, conference room, hotel
Schuko + USB-C Power Delivery 1x USB-C up to 65 W (PD) Laptop charging, modern office

USB-C socket – the future-proof standard

USB-C is the current standard for modern mobile devices, laptops and peripherals. USB-C sockets with Power Delivery (PD) deliver significantly higher charging outputs than classic USB-A ports – up to 65 W depending on the version, which is sufficient for charging notebooks. For new installations in offices, hotel areas and conference rooms, a combination of Schuko contact, USB-A and USB-C is therefore recommended.

Key buying criteria at a glance Charging output (A / W) · Connector type (Type A, Type C, Power Delivery) · Number of USB ports · Design programme compatibility (Gira System 55, Busch-Jaeger Reflex SI, Jung) · CE certification and overload protection

Applications for USB sockets

USB sockets can be used effectively in almost any setting – both in residential buildings and commercial installations:

  • Office – smartphones, headsets and tablets always charged without occupying the Schuko contact
  • Hotel and hospitality – charging points at the bedside or workstation without external adapters
  • Conference room – USB-C with Power Delivery for laptops directly at the wall socket
  • Residential – bedroom, kitchen, living room with integrated charging
  • Public areas – waiting rooms, reception areas, café seating

USB extension lead – the flexible alternative

Alongside flush-mounted USB sockets, WATT24 also offers USB extension leads – the mobile alternative for desks, conference tables and workstations that do not require fixed wiring. USB extension leads combine multiple Schuko contacts with integrated USB ports (Type A and/or Type C) in a single desktop unit and can be used without an electrician. Ideal for offices, meeting rooms and anywhere flexibility is needed and a flush-mounted installation is not practical.

Installing USB sockets

USB sockets are installed in the same way as standard flush-mounted sockets: insert the module into a standardised back box to DIN 49073, connect the cable (L, N, PE), clip on the cover frame. The installation effort compared to a standard Schuko socket is identical – the insert is simply deeper, as the USB electronics require additional space. Always check the required installation depth before mounting.

Important notice: In Germany, connecting sockets to the mains is reserved for qualified electricians. The mechanical mounting of the insert is straightforward – however, the electrical connection must be carried out by a certified electrician.

FAQ: USB Sockets

What is the difference between USB Type A and USB Type C in sockets?
USB Type A is the classic rectangular connector with typically 5–12 W charging output – sufficient for smartphones and smaller devices. USB Type C is the more modern oval connector that reaches up to 65 W and beyond with Power Delivery (PD), making it capable of charging notebooks as well. For new installations, a combination of both types or a dedicated USB-C PD version is recommended.
How deep does the back box need to be for a USB socket?
USB socket inserts require a greater installation depth than standard Schuko inserts due to the integrated charging electronics – typically at least 47–60 mm. The exact depth is manufacturer-specific and should be checked in the product datasheet before installation.
Can USB sockets be installed in existing flush-mounted back boxes?
Generally yes – all flush-mounted USB sockets are designed for standardised back boxes to DIN 49073. The key factor is available installation depth: older, shallower boxes may not provide enough space for the USB electronics. If in doubt, check the depth of the existing box before purchasing.
What does Power Delivery (PD) mean for USB sockets?
Power Delivery is a USB charging standard that enables significantly higher charging outputs than conventional USB – between 18 W and 100 W depending on the version. PD-capable USB-C sockets can therefore charge not only smartphones but also tablets and notebooks. The charging output is automatically negotiated between the socket and the device.
Are USB sockets compatible with all switch programmes?
USB socket inserts are programme-specific – a Gira USB insert fits Gira System 55 frames, a Busch-Jaeger insert fits Reflex SI frames, and so on. The inserts fit all standardised back boxes to DIN 49073 but must be combined with the cover frame of the installed design programme.
