Applications for bollard lights

Modern bollard lights are a simple, efficient addition to any outdoor lighting scheme. They provide optimal illumination for paths, steps, and access routes while adding a decorative touch. And it's not just private gardens and driveways where bollard lights shine: they are also widely used on company premises, in parks, at schools, and in public spaces.

  • Garden paths and driveways
  • Steps and entrance areas
  • Car parks and company premises
  • Parks, green spaces, and public walkways
  • Hotel approaches and hospitality areas

Bollard lights with motion sensor

For driveways, house entrances, and low-traffic paths, bollard lights with motion sensor are an ideal choice. They switch on automatically when someone approaches, keeping energy consumption to a minimum. Many models can also be combined with a daylight sensor so the luminaire only responds after dark. Whether a model includes an integrated sensor is stated in the product description.

What to look for when buying

For bollard lights to work reliably over the long term, the right IP rating is essential. All bollard lights in our shop are fully equipped to handle dust and moisture without compromising performance or lifespan.

IP rating Protection against Recommended use
IP44 Splash water from any direction Covered outdoor areas, sheltered paths
IP54 Dust (limited), splash water Garden, driveway, company car park
IP65 Dust (complete), water jets Exposed outdoor areas, public walkways
Planning tip: As well as IP rating, pay attention to the housing material. Aluminium and stainless steel are especially corrosion-resistant and well suited to permanent outdoor use. As a rule of thumb for spacing, the distance between two bollard lights should be around 3 to 4 times the mounting height. At 60 cm height, that means roughly 180 to 240 cm spacing; at 100 cm, 300 to 400 cm. This ensures even illumination without dark gaps between luminaires.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about bollard lights

What are bollard lights and where are they used?
Bollard lights are low-level outdoor luminaires mounted on a short post or base. They provide even, safe illumination for paths, driveways, steps, and garden areas. As well as their lighting function, they act as visual path markers and can add a decorative element to outdoor spaces.
What IP rating do bollard lights need?
Bollard lights for outdoor use require at least IP44, and ideally IP54 or IP65. For permanently damp or heavily exposed locations, IP65 is recommended. The IP rating is stated in the technical specifications of each model.
Are bollard lights available with motion sensors?
Yes. Bollard lights with an integrated motion sensor switch on automatically when someone approaches, keeping energy consumption to a minimum. They are especially suited to driveways, house entrances, and low-traffic paths. Whether a model includes a sensor is stated in the product description.
At what height and spacing should bollard lights be installed?
Bollard lights are typically installed at a height of 40 to 100 cm. Lower models around 40 to 60 cm suit ground-level path marking, while taller models around 80 to 100 cm provide wider area illumination. As a rule of thumb, the spacing between two bollard lights should be around 3 to 4 times the mounting height: at 60 cm height, roughly 180 to 240 cm; at 100 cm height, 300 to 400 cm. This ensures even illumination without dark gaps.
What is the difference between a bollard light and a path light?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Bollard lights stand on a short, solid post designed for ground fixing. Path light is the broader term covering all luminaires that illuminate walkways and access routes, including wall-mounted models and slimline post-top fittings.
