Surge protection & earthing material
Safe solutions for your electrical project
Surges are one of the most common causes of damage to electrical equipment - whether due to lightning strikes, switching operations or mains faults. Comprehensive protection against overvoltage is therefore not a luxury, but an absolutely necessary measure to protect human life, sensitive devices and installations. At WATT24 you will find a wide range of surge arresters, earthing materials and lightning protection components - from leading brands such as ABB, ABN, Dehn, Eaton, Phoenix Contact and Mersen. Whether for retrofitting or for new buildings: We offer you everything you need to protect your power grid safely and in line with standards.

What is overvoltage - and why is it dangerous?
An overvoltage is a short-term increase in voltage that significantly exceeds the rated voltage. It is usually caused by switching operations, residual current events or lightning strikes.
Direct or indirect lightning strikes in particular cause dangerous voltage peaks in the power grid - with potentially fatal consequences for electronic components, control systems or entire systems.
In contrast to slow mains fluctuations, overvoltages act spontaneously - they occur in a flash and leave sensitive devices no time to react.
Without suitable protective devices, damage often occurs in sub-distribution boards, cable ducts or to devices connected to sockets.
Surge protection according to plan
The protection levels at a glance
Complete surge protection is made up of several stages - from the coarse protection component at the building entrance to the fine protection on end devices. This structure also follows the VDE standard and the classification according to overvoltage categories:
- Type 1 arresters (lightning current arresters): Used to discharge high lightning currents - often equipped with a spark gap and installed in buildings with an external lightning conductor.
- Type 2 arresters (SPDs): Limit overvoltages caused by mains circuits and indirect lightning strikes. Often installed in sub-distribution boards.
- Type 3 arresters (fine protection): Protect sensitive equipment at device level, e.g. in socket strips or directly in front of sensitive electronics.
The combination of spark gaps, varistors and decoupling ensures a graduated protection level that distributes the energy in a targeted manner and dissipates it in a controlled manner.
Earthing material
The protective basis for all down conductors
Every surge arrester needs a functioning earthing system. Earthing material ensures that dangerous currents are safely discharged to earth via lightning current arresters - without any repercussions on other components or the system's busbar.
We have earthing materials for every application:
- Foundation earth electrodes for standard-compliant new buildings
- Deep earth electrodes for difficult ground conditions
- Equipotential bonding bars and busbars
- Earthing straps, earthing cables and connection clamps
Choosing the right material is crucial: while copper is highly conductive, stainless steel variants are more resistant to chemical stresses. Hot-dip galvanized steel is a common solution in the concrete sector.
