The insert is the functional component behind the cover. Gira offers an exceptionally broad range – from standard switching functions through to complex control components. The key categories at a glance:

Insert type Function
Switch insert Single-pole, two-way, series and intermediate switching
Socket insert Schuko type F, 16 A / 250 V~, with or without enhanced touch protection
Dimmer insert Rotary and touch dimmers for LED, halogen and conventional loads
Pushbutton insert Non-latching, for doorbells, stairwell timers and KNX
Blind insert Control of roller shutters, blinds and awnings
Function insert USB charger, DALI control unit, room temperature controller, speed controller, key switch, motion detector and more

Gira socket inserts

Gira socket inserts are designed for flush-mounted installation in standard UP boxes. They comply with DIN VDE 0620, are rated at 16 A / 250 V~ and are available in several versions: with enhanced touch protection (child safety), with hinged cover for wet areas (IP44) and as combination inserts with USB charging function. Combined with the matching frames from the relevant Gira design programme, they create a consistent appearance throughout the entire building.

Planning note: insert, frame and cover Gira distinguishes between insert, frame and rocker/cover. The insert handles the electrical function and is installed in the flush-mounted box. The frame holds one or more inserts together. The rocker or cover forms the visible operating surface. All three components must come from the same design programme, as dimensions and fixing points are programme-specific.

Compatibility & installation

All Gira inserts follow the 55 mm grid dimension and fit standard flush-mounted boxes to DIN 49073. Fixing is via expansion claws or screws depending on the box type. Within a design programme – such as System 55 – inserts, frames and covers are freely interchangeable. An overview of compatible programmes is available on the Gira manufacturer page.

FAQ: Gira inserts

What is the difference between an insert, frame and cover in Gira?
The insert is the electrically functional component – it is installed in the flush-mounted box and handles the switching, socket or control function. The frame holds one or more inserts together visually and is fixed to the wall. The rocker or cover is the visible operating element that clips onto the insert. All three components must come from the same design programme.
Do Gira inserts fit all flush-mounted boxes?
Gira inserts follow the 55 mm standard and fit all standardised flush-mounted boxes to DIN 49073 with an opening of at least 55 × 55 mm. The required installation depth varies between 28 and 44 mm depending on insert type – deeper inserts such as dimmers or KNX bus couplers require a correspondingly deep installation box.
Are Gira socket inserts available with child protection?
Yes – Gira socket inserts are available with enhanced touch protection (child safety). With these versions, plugs can only be inserted when both contact pins are introduced simultaneously – one-sided insertion, for example with an object, is not possible. This version is required in many commercial and public environments.
Can Gira inserts be replaced retrospectively?
Yes – as Gira inserts are modular, the insert can generally be replaced without changing the flush-mounted box or the wiring. The requirement is that the new insert comes from the same design programme or at least uses the same 55 mm standard. The electrical replacement must be carried out by a qualified electrician.
