Gira switches: switching functions at a glance

Gira has the right switching function for every installation requirement. The key types available at WATT24:

Switch function Typical application
Rocker switch (single-pole) Single light or circuit, one switching point
Two-way switch Control a light from two switching points
Series switch Two independent circuits via a single switch
Intermediate switch Control a light from three or more switching points
Blind switch Control of roller shutters, blinds and awnings
Switch with pilot light Switching state indication, e.g. ventilation, cellar
KNX pushbutton Bus-based control for lighting, blinds and scenes

Design programmes & versions

Gira switches are available across several design programmes, each differing in form, surface finish and intended environment. Within a programme, all components – switches, sockets, inserts and frames – are coordinated and freely interchangeable.

  • Gira System 55 the most widely installed programme: flush-fitting, modular, available in gloss white, anthracite, stainless steel and more
  • Gira E2 – angular design language with structured surfaces, for modern residential and commercial projects
  • Gira Esprit – premium materials including glass and aluminium for representative areas
  • Gira Event – curved forms for classic and high-end interior concepts

IP44 splash-proof versions are available for wet areas and outdoor installations. Surface-mounted (AP) variants are available for retrofit installations without chasing.

Installation note: connecting Gira switches Gira switches are installed as inserts in standard flush-mounted boxes to DIN 49073. Connection is via screw terminals or plug-in quick-connect terminals depending on insert type. For two-way and intermediate switching, correct assignment of switching conductors is essential – L1 for two-way, additional switching conductors for intermediate configurations. All electrical connections must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

FAQ: Gira switches

What is the difference between a rocker switch and a toggle switch?
A rocker switch has a flush, centrally pivoting rocker – pressing one side raises the other. It is the standard switch type used in flush-mounted electrical installation today. A toggle switch has a lever-style actuator that is flipped in one direction and stays there. Toggle switches are primarily used in industrial applications, control panel construction and on equipment – in residential wiring, the rocker switch is the norm.
What is the difference between a rocker switch and a pushbutton?
A rocker switch is a latching device: it stays in the pressed position and keeps the circuit permanently on or off. A pushbutton is non-latching: it closes the circuit only while it is being pressed and automatically returns to its resting position when released. Pushbuttons are used for doorbells, stairwell timers and KNX control applications, among others.
What is a two-way switch and when is it used?
A two-way switch allows a single circuit to be controlled from two separate locations – the classic example being a hallway light that can be switched both at the entrance and at the far end of the corridor. Technically, a two-way switch is a changeover switch with two positions. For three or more switching points, an intermediate switch is inserted into the circuit between the two-way switches.
Are Gira switches suitable for KNX installations?
Yes – Gira offers KNX pushbuttons and bus couplers that integrate into existing KNX systems. The KNX components are ETS-programmable and support switching, dimming, blind control and scene functions. They are visually integrated into the Gira design programmes and can be combined with conventional switches in the same multi-gang frames.
