Twilight switch
Twilight switches are a great alternative to motion detectors when you want lighting to switch on independently of whether anyone is present nearby. Timer switches can serve a similar purpose, but they need to be reprogrammed seasonally to remain efficient. Twilight switches are the far more convenient option for automatic light control – switching via a light sensor based purely on ambient brightness.

Twilight Switches for Brightness-Based Lighting Control
Unlike timer switches, a twilight switch adapts automatically to the seasons – sun goes down, lights come on.
Advantages of Twilight Switches
Various formats: Available for indoor and outdoor use – as surface-mounted devices, DIN rail units or for direct installation into luminaires and junction boxes.
Individual adjustment options: The brightness threshold can be set freely so that lights activate exactly when needed.
No occupancy required: Lighting switches purely based on brightness – ideal for continuously lit access areas, pathways and outdoor luminaires.
Wall mounting and built-in installation: Depending on the model, suitable for wall mounting or direct installation into the luminaire.
No seasonal adjustment needed: The switch responds to actual light conditions – working correctly in summer and winter alike, without any manual intervention.
Tip: House number lights with a built-in twilight sensor are a particularly practical and efficient lighting solution – virtually maintenance-free and always active at exactly the right time.
How Do Twilight Switches Work?
The sensors operate using an integrated, light-sensitive photodiode. This compares the ambient brightness to a reference value and controls the output accordingly: the lamp switches on when brightness falls below the threshold and switches off when it rises above it. The threshold is freely adjustable, ensuring you always have light exactly when you need it – in every season.
What to Look for When Choosing a Twilight Switch
In most cases, a twilight switch is used outdoors to automatically control LED exterior luminaires at dusk or in complete darkness. An adequate IP protection class is essential to prevent moisture and dust from entering the housing and damaging the electronics. For outdoor installation, IP54 is the recommended minimum. A freely adjustable brightness threshold is also important for adapting to local lighting conditions.
Key selection criteria at a glance: IP protection class (ingress protection) and freely adjustable brightness threshold settings.
Some models – such as those in the Theben LUNA range – also integrate a built-in timer. This allows you to specify that lighting only runs until a certain time of night, even if it is still dark.
Frequently Asked Questions About Twilight Switches
What is a twilight switch and how does it work?
A twilight switch controls lighting automatically based on ambient brightness. An integrated photodiode compares the surrounding light level to an adjustable reference value. When brightness drops below this value, the switch turns the lights on – and off again when the level rises above it.
What is the difference between a twilight switch and a timer switch?
A timer switch turns lights on and off at fixed times – regardless of whether it is actually dark outside. This requires manual reprogramming as the seasons change. A twilight switch responds to actual brightness levels, switching lights at exactly the right moment without any manual input.
What IP protection class do I need for a twilight switch used outdoors?
For outdoor installation, a minimum of IP54 is recommended to ensure protection against water spray from all directions. Most outdoor models in the watt24 range achieve IP54 or IP55, making them well suited for typical outdoor applications.
Can twilight switches be combined with motion detectors?
Yes. Some devices combine both functions in a single housing – brightness-controlled switching and motion detection. Alternatively, separate twilight switches and motion detectors can be wired together so that lights only activate when it is dark and movement is detected simultaneously.
