Applications for LED floodlights

LED floodlights are needed wherever large areas require high-output illumination. Typical applications include:

  • Sports facilities and recreational areas
  • Facade and building illumination
  • Company premises, car parks, and storage areas
  • Fire service and emergency vehicles
  • Construction sites and industrial plants
  • Entrances and access routes

LED floodlights by output

The right wattage depends on the area to be illuminated and the required illuminance. As a guide:

Output Typical use Luminous flux (approx.)
30–50 W Entrance, facade, access route 3,000–6,000 lm
100–150 W Car park, warehouse, smaller outdoor area 10,000–18,000 lm
200–400 W Sports facility, company premises 20,000–50,000 lm
500–1000 W Large sports complex, stadium, industry 60,000–130,000 lm
Electrician's tip: What matters for effective illumination is luminous flux in lumens, not wattage alone. An efficient 200 W LED floodlight can replace an older 1000 W halogen floodlight. For standard-compliant planning — for example to EN 12193 for sports lighting — we recommend a light calculation via our light calculation service.

LED floodlights for sports facilities

Illuminating sports facilities calls for high-output LED floodlights with high luminous flux and even light distribution. Key selection criteria are:

  • High luminous flux for standard-compliant illuminance (lux) on the playing surface
  • CRI ≥ 70, ideally ≥ 80, for good colour rendering
  • IP65 for permanent outdoor use
  • Symmetrical or asymmetrical light distribution depending on mast position

Floodlights with motion sensor

For entrances, car parks, and security-relevant outdoor areas, LED floodlights with motion sensor are the ideal choice. They switch on automatically when movement is detected, keeping energy consumption to a minimum. Models such as the Steinel XLED PRO are rotatable and offer precise sensor adjustment. Whether a floodlight includes an integrated sensor is listed in its technical specifications.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about LED floodlights

What wattage do I need for an LED floodlight?
The wattage required depends on the area to be illuminated and the target illuminance. For smaller areas and facades, 30–100 W is sufficient. Sports facilities and large outdoor areas often require 200–1000 W or multiple floodlights. What matters is the luminous flux (lumens), not wattage alone.
What IP rating does an outdoor LED floodlight need?
For outdoor use, LED floodlights with at least IP65 are required. IP65 protects against dust and water jets and is the standard for floodlights on facades, sports grounds, and commercial outdoor areas.
Can I combine an LED floodlight with a motion sensor?
Yes — many LED floodlights are available with an integrated motion sensor. They switch on automatically when movement is detected, saving energy. External motion sensors can also be wired in separately. Check the technical specifications to see whether a model includes a sensor.
Which LED floodlight is suitable for a sports facility?
For sports facilities, high-output LED floodlights from 200 W with symmetrical or asymmetrical light distribution are recommended. Key criteria are high luminous flux, a CRI of 70 or higher, and at least IP65 for permanent outdoor use. A light calculation is recommended for standard-compliant sports lighting.
What is the difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical light distribution?
Symmetrical floodlights distribute light evenly in all directions, suited to open squares and areas that need illumination from all sides. Asymmetrical models concentrate light in one direction — ideal for facade lighting, access routes, or sports fields where light from a few mounting points needs to reach as far as possible.
