What is Gira System 55?

Gira System 55 was introduced in 1985 and has since established itself as a standard in the German electrical installation market. The name derives from the uniform 55 mm grid dimension: all inserts follow this measurement, enabling free combination of all components within the programme. Switches, sockets, dimmers, pushbuttons and a wide range of function inserts are all designed to work together seamlessly.

The programme is aimed at electricians and planners looking for a consistent, durable and norm-compliant solution for residential and commercial projects. Thanks to broad availability and long product lifecycles, System 55 is also well suited to extensions and retrofits in existing installations.

Finishes & colours

Gira System 55 is available in a wide range of colours and surface finishes – for consistent installations across different interior concepts:

Finish Typical applications
Gloss white Living spaces, offices, standard installations
Matt white Modern interiors, understated aesthetics
Anthracite Commercial, industrial design, dark wall surfaces
Matt black High-end residential projects, contrast applications
Stainless steel Representative areas, reception zones
Aluminium Industrial and technical environments

Components at a glance

System 55 covers all common installation requirements. The key components available at WATT24:

  • Gira System 55 Switches rocker and push-button switches as single, two-way and intermediate switches, norm-compliant to DIN VDE
  • Gira System 55 Sockets Schuko type F, 16 A / 250 V~, with enhanced touch protection and USB variants
  • Gira System 55 Inserts switch inserts, socket inserts and function inserts for standard flush-mounted boxes to DIN 49073
  • System 55 Pushbuttons – rocker and flat pushbuttons for blind, lighting and KNX control
  • System 55 Dimmers – rotary and touch dimmers for LED, halogen and conventional loads
Planning note: System 55 and Gira E2 Gira System 55 and Gira E2 share the same 55 mm insert standard – inserts from both programmes are mechanically compatible and can be fitted into the same flush-mounted boxes. Frames and covers are not interchangeable, however, as the two programmes have distinct design languages and cover geometries. Separating programmes room by room is straightforward.

FAQ: Gira System 55

What does the number 55 mean in Gira System 55?
The 55 refers to the uniform 55 mm grid dimension that all inserts in the programme follow. This measurement defines the opening in flush-mounted boxes and frames, and enables free combination of all System 55 components regardless of function or finish.
Is Gira System 55 compatible with Gira E2?
At insert level, yes – both programmes follow the 55 mm standard and can be installed in the same flush-mounted boxes. Frames and rockers are not interchangeable, however, as System 55 and E2 use different design languages and cover geometries. Separating the programmes room by room works without any issues.
What are the dimensions of Gira System 55?
A single System 55 insert measures 55 × 55 mm. A standard single frame has outer dimensions of approx. 85 × 85 mm. Multi-gang frames (2–5 gang) are available in both horizontal and vertical configurations. Installation depth in the flush-mounted box is between 28 and 44 mm depending on insert type – refer to the relevant datasheet for exact figures.
What applications is Gira System 55 suitable for?
System 55 is equally suited to residential, commercial and functional buildings. The broad range of finishes – from gloss white through anthracite to stainless steel – means it can be integrated into virtually any interior concept. IP44 splash-proof variants are available for bathrooms and outdoor areas. For smart home and KNX installations, compatible pushbuttons and bus couplers are available within the system.
