Frequently Asked Questions about WAGO Terminal Blocks

How do WAGO lever-lock connectors (221 series) work?

With the 221 series, you open the orange lever, insert the stripped conductor up to the stop and close the lever again. The integrated spring automatically fixes the conductor. To release, simply open the lever again: no tools required. The transparent design enables visual inspection of correct insertion depth.

Which WAGO terminal for which conductor cross-section?

The selection depends on your conductor cross-section: For fine control and signal cables (0.08–0.5 mm²), WAGO DIN rail terminal blocks of the 2000 series are suitable. For standard installation cables (1.5–2.5 mm²), the 221 or 2273 lever-operated connectors are ideal. For thicker cables up to 6 mm², choose the 221 series with larger housings. For main cables in control cabinets up to 95 mm², there are special high-current terminals.

WAGO 221 or 2273 – what's the difference?

The 221 series has lever locks for opening and closing: ideal if you need to rewire frequently or if visual inspection is important to you. The 2273 series is more compact and uses push-in technology: insert conductor, done. However, conductors cannot be released anymore. 2273 is more space-saving, 221 is more flexible and reusable.

Can flexible cables be connected without ferrules?

Yes, this is a core strength of CAGE CLAMP technology. The spring force contacts flexible strands evenly without damaging them. With screw terminals, the fine wires would suffer under screw pressure. Simply twist flexible cables, strip them and insert them into the WAGO terminal – the spring does the rest.

Are WAGO terminal blocks approved for outdoor use and wet rooms?

WAGO terminal blocks themselves have protection rating IP20 and are intended for use in enclosed housings. For outdoor areas and wet rooms, the terminals must be installed in appropriately protected housings (at least IP54). There are special WAGO gel boxes with IP68 for buried cable connections. Refer to the respective data sheets for the application area.

Can different conductor cross-sections be connected in one terminal?

Yes, within the approved cross-section range of the respective terminal. A WAGO 221-413 (for 0.2–4 mm²) can, for example, connect a 1.5 mm² conductor with a 2.5 mm² conductor. The spring force adjusts automatically – unlike screw terminals, where different cross-sections can be problematic.

How many switching cycles can WAGO lever-lock connectors withstand?

WAGO specifies at least 100 switching cycles for the 221 series, meaning 100 times of opening, releasing and rewiring. In practice, the terminals often last considerably longer if the conductors are cleanly stripped and not damaged. For permanent installations, this doesn't matter anyway.
