FAQ: Common Questions about Light Sources

Which light sources does WATT24 offer?
WATT24 offers LED bulbs with bases such as E14, E27 and GU10, LED tubes replacing T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes, LED strips, fairy lights, fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps, UV-C lamps, indicator and signal lamps, and metal halide lamps.
Can fluorescent tubes still be sold?
Under the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, as amended by delegated directives in 2022, most compact fluorescent lamps and T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes may no longer be placed on the EU market since 2023. Stock already on the market may still be sold and used. LED tubes are the main replacement.
What should you check when retrofitting LED tubes?
The key factor is the ballast in the luminaire. There are LED tubes for magnetic ballasts, for electronic ballasts and for direct 230 V mains operation. With magnetic ballasts the starter is replaced by an LED starter; for mains-voltage tubes the luminaire is rewired.
What does the energy label on light sources mean?
Since September 2021, light sources in the EU are labelled on a scale from A to G under Regulation (EU) 2019/2015. The class depends on luminous efficacy in lumens per watt. Many current LED bulbs fall into classes C to F.
What is the difference between a light source and a luminaire?
A light source is the replaceable lamp with a standardised base. A luminaire is the complete fixture with housing, lamp holder and, where needed, control gear. WATT24 lists luminaires in the Interior lighting and Exterior lighting categories.
