Where LED tubes are used

The LED tube is popular in both commercial and residential settings. It's mainly found in utility spaces, thanks to its wide-area light distribution, its robustness, and its comparatively high efficiency and lifespan.

Commercial:

  • Offices
  • Retail spaces
  • Sanitary areas
  • Parking garages
  • Industrial facilities

Residential:

  • Garage
  • Basement
  • Bathroom
  • Laundry room
Electrician's tip: Many LED tubes are perfectly suited for use in waterproof luminaires or explosion-protected luminaires. However, some models only allow operation with traditional fluorescent lamps. Check the product description of the relevant waterproof luminaire to see which lamp type is permitted.

LED tubes: T5, T8 and T9 compared

As a modern alternative to the classic fluorescent tube, you'll find LED tubes in a range of formats and variants. The most common are:

Type Base Tube diameter
T5 LED tube G5 16 mm
T8 LED tube G13 26 mm
T9 LED tube G10q circular

LED compact fluorescent lamps are also available as a modern alternative to traditional compact fluorescent lamps or energy-saving bulbs.

Use the retrofit product finder to find the right LED replacement for your conventional fluorescent tube in just a few clicks, matched to base, length, and ballast.

Advantages of LED tubes

Fluorescent tubes are popular thanks to their wide range of applications. Because of their wide-area illumination, they're commonly used in offices, workshops, production facilities, and public or medical buildings. Residential applications also benefit from the brightness and flexibility of these robust lamps.

Compared to the classic fluorescent tube, the LED tube brings numerous additional advantages:

  • High energy efficiency
  • Flicker-free, quiet operation
  • Long service life
  • Instant full brightness

Replacing fluorescent tubes with LED

In 2023, the gradual phase-out of fluorescent lamps set out in the RoHS directive took effect. This means fluorescent tubes may no longer be manufactured. Placing already-produced tubes on the market is still permitted, but it's worth thinking about switching to efficient, sustainable LED technology.

Want to know which solution fits your application? Our light consulting for retrofitting explains exactly what matters when upgrading to LED, from the ballast to overall light planning.

Dimmable LED tubes

Some LED tubes are dimmable. Whether that applies to your tube is listed in the product description or technical specifications of the lamp.

Electrician's tip: When switching from a traditional fluorescent lamp to LED, you usually also need to replace the dimmer. Find the right LED dimmers in our shop under Dimmers.

Disposing of fluorescent tubes

Strict regulations apply when disposing of old fluorescent tubes. They contain pollutants like mercury and must never go in household waste. Some valuable components and precious metals can also be returned to the recycling loop.

LED tubes are also made from high-quality materials that can be recycled. Collection points and recycling centers accept your old lamps free of charge and take care of proper disposal. For the rules that apply to each lamp type, see our guide on how to dispose of fluorescent tubes.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about LED tubes

What are the advantages of LED tubes over traditional fluorescent tubes?
LED tubes are far more energy-efficient, run flicker-free and almost silently, reach full brightness instantly, and last significantly longer than traditional fluorescent tubes.
What types of LED tubes are available?
The most common types are T5 LED tubes with a G5 base and 16 mm diameter, T8 LED tubes with a G13 base and 26 mm diameter, and T9 LED tubes with a G10q base in a circular shape. LED compact fluorescent lamps are also available as a modern alternative to traditional energy-saving bulbs.
Can I replace any fluorescent tube 1:1 with an LED tube?
In most cases, yes. What matters is whether your fixture runs on a magnetic ballast (KVG), a magnetic ballast with starter (VVG), or an electronic ballast (EVG), as this determines which LED variant fits. The WATT24 retrofit product finder helps you find the right LED replacement for your existing fluorescent tube in just a few clicks.
Are LED tubes dimmable?
Some LED tubes are dimmable, others aren't. Whether a specific tube is dimmable is stated in the product description or technical specifications. When switching from a traditional fluorescent lamp to LED, you usually also need to replace the dimmer with an LED-compatible model.
Can I still buy traditional fluorescent tubes?
Since 2023, fluorescent lamps may no longer be newly manufactured under the RoHS directive. Tubes already produced may still be sold and used. Since supply is limited, switching to LED technology is worth considering sooner rather than later.
