Who is behind Shelly?

Shelly is a brand of Allterco Robotics Ltd., an electronics company headquartered in Sofia, Bulgaria. Founded in 2015 and listed on the Bulgarian Stock Exchange, Allterco runs its own hardware and firmware development team.

All devices receive OTA firmware updates. New features are rolled out to older device generations as well. For stable long-term support in commercial environments, the Pro line is the safest choice: Pro devices are rated for continuous duty and receive prioritised support.

Shelly flush-mount modules: smart home retrofit without major works

Shelly's 1-series and 2-series flush-mount modules fit standard back boxes from 40 mm depth and work in parallel with existing switches and push buttons. No frame replacement, no chasing, no new wiring.

The most common planning mistake: ordering a module that requires a neutral wire for a location that only has live and earth. Before ordering, check whether L, N and PE are all present at the switch position. If there is no neutral, go for the 1L or 2L variant. For loads under 25 W (typical for LED), add the Shelly Bypass in parallel.

Shelly roller blind and shutter control: the 2PM in practice

For roller blind and shutter automation, the Shelly 2PM is the go-to device. Two independent switching channels or a combined shutter channel with automatic end-stop detection, runtime calibration and position memory. The 2PM connects directly to the existing motor without any changes to the mechanical installation.

Schedules, sun-protection scenes and wind shutoff can be configured via the Shelly app, Home Assistant or ioBroker. The 2PM also monitors motor current, enabling software-based overload protection.

Shelly 3EM: professional three-phase energy metering

The Shelly Pro 3EM measures active power, reactive power and energy consumption across all three phases simultaneously, with ±1% accuracy. Data is available locally via REST and MQTT, and optionally through the Shelly Cloud. For high-current applications, external CT clamps up to 400 A are available.

For retrofitting into an existing distribution board: the supplied Rogowski coils or clip-on CT clamps wrap around the phase conductors without breaking the circuit, so installation is possible on live systems. Important: configure the phase assignment correctly in the web interface to avoid discrepancies in consumption and feed-in readings.

Shelly app and cloud: what's free, what's not?

The Shelly app is free for iOS and Android, with no subscription and no locked features. The Shelly Cloud is an optional service for remote access and multi-site device management, also free in the basic tier.

Anyone who prefers not to use the cloud can run all devices fully locally. REST API, MQTT and WebSocket are available without a cloud account. A VPN into the local network is all that's needed for remote access.

Is Shelly future-proof?

Shelly's Gen4 platform is built around Matter, the cross-manufacturer smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung. Matter-certified Shelly devices work with any Matter controller without proprietary bridges or cloud services.

All Shelly devices support OTA updates. Allterco has a track record of shipping meaningful firmware updates to older hardware generations, not just new products. The active developer community around Home Assistant and ioBroker ensures integrations keep pace with new releases.
