IP protection class

The code of the IP protection type or IP protection class indicates the extent to which electrical devices are suitable for operation under various environmental conditions. The IP value is always given in two digits.

The first digit refers to the protection against foreign bodies and contact, the second indicates the extent to which a device can be exposed to moisture and water.

The value of the first digit ranges from 0 to 6 (0 = no protection; 6 = dust-tight, complete protection against contact). The value of the second digit ranges from 0 to 8 (0 = no protection; 8 = protection against permanent immersion). If one of the two code digits is not to be specified, or if it must be specified, replace it with the letter X.

Example: IP65 = protection against dust in harmful quantities, complete protection against contact; protection against water jets from any angle.
